James Carr - Chair of Fareham Labour Party
Press Statement - 22nd April 2008 Re: Refuse Collection
"Fareham Labour Party is committed to restoring the weekly
collection of
refuse. There are real potential health hazards with waste overflowing from
dustbins owing to large families. The smell of waste will attract vermin. As
a double whammy the Conservative Council charges for dealing with rat
infestations. This used to be a free service. Fareham Labour party is also
committed to increasing recycling and to recycle more different types of
waste. We believe this is compatible with weekly bin collections.
Labour councillors supported fully the implementation of recycling
waste in the 1990s but we opposed the financial trade off that was wanted by
the Tories to reduce the weekly bin collections to fortnightly. We won the
argument at the time and were instrumental in saving the weekly bin
collections. Unfortunately with no Labour councillors now sitting on Fareham
Borough Council we were not in a position to prevent the reduction in
service when it was introduced. Had Labour councillors been present we would
have opposed the change vigorously. "

Press Statement - Re: Parking in Fareham Town Centre
"At peak times there are always too many cars and insufficient parking
space.
Much improved, inexpensive public transport and cycling facilities would be
the best solution but would require considerable investment with incentives
to encourage use of public transport. This would also be good for the
environment. Elected politicians must be prepared to be innovative and to
take risks if they are to solve these problems. This is unlikely in Fareham
with the current administration. Car parks generate considerable income that
subsidises the council tax. I would support more resident only parking in
the town centre. "
